PNG death-adder (Acanthophis rugosus)

This viperlike snake is actually an Elapid. They are real sit and wait predators. They are not fast in moving from one place to another, but their strike is extremely fast. I've seldom seen snakes which grabbed a mouse with the speed of a deathadder! Normally they are not agressive, but be aware of their speed when you deal with them. There are many species of deathadders in Australia and also some in Papua New Guinea like Acanthophis rugosus and Acanthophis laevis.
Acanthophis rugosus can be recognized by its rough scalation in the neck region (from which the name rugosus derived).
